Adults learn differently then children do. In this online workshop, created by the Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center (VALRC) you will learn what motivates adult learners, and how to incorporate learner-centered instruction in your tutoring sessions.
Use this site to complete Literacy for Life’s online training requirements for new tutor orientation. Go to heading “Instructors.” Choose at least two resources to explore (at least one from “Online Courses” category). The other can come from any of these categories: Techniques and Strategies, Lesson Plans and Activities, Literacy for Social Change or Online Courses. If you need help, please see a program manager or the computer specialist in the computer lab.
Located at VCU in Richmond, VALRC offers numerous workshops throughout the year, as well as online training that’s free for adult educators in Virginia. There are many videos pertaining to ESOL instruction on this site, including those that show techniques for one-on-one tutors.
Scroll down this page and check out the many links to websites for both tutors and learners: ABE, GED, ESOL and technology education.
